A colourful, art-led interior for a house in Richmond, West London, blending mid-century modern and contemporary design
Completed in 2024, this project was a joy from start to finish, and we loved every minute of working with such an engaged and enthusiastic family. Our clients have a strong appreciation for colour and art, and the brief was to create a home that celebrated both, bringing warmth, personality and energy into the spaces they use most.
The design concept centred on a confident mix of mid-century modern influences and clean contemporary detailing, layered with an eclectic, artistic twist. The interiors were carefully designed to complement and showcase the beautiful artwork in the schemes, allowing each piece to become an integral part of the overall composition.
A new SieMatic kitchen forms the heart of the ground floor, combining walnut veneer cabinetry with sleek grey lacquer and refined brass ironmongery. This pairing creates a rich yet contemporary feel, perfectly aligned with the overall design narrative. The floors throughout the ground level were replaced with natural oak herringbone planks, bringing warmth, texture and a sense of continuity to the layout.
Where mid-century warmth meets contemporary craftsmanship
In the living room, we integrated a walnut panelled wall which we subtly illuminated from above with integrated LED lighting, creating depth, atmosphere and a strong architectural focal point. All upholstery and soft furnishings throughout the project were custom made, ensuring a tailored fit and a cohesive, layered look.
A sculptural wine cellar combining drama with practical luxury
This bespoke spiral wine cellar, created in collaboration with Spiral Cellars, was designed as both a functional storage solution and a striking architectural feature within the home. Concealed beneath the floor and revealed by a descending spiral staircase, the cellar introduces a sense of discovery while providing a carefully organised space for an extensive wine collection.
The curved concrete shelving follows the geometry of the spiral form, allowing each bottle to be stored at the optimal angle while creating a visually rhythmic display as you descend. Integrated labelling and varied storage compartments accommodate everything from everyday bottles to prized vintages and larger cases.
Working closely with Spiral Cellars, we ensured the design integrated seamlessly with the wider interior scheme while delivering a highly specialised environment for wine storage. The result is a refined and atmospheric feature that enhances the experience of the home. We initially engaged Tim for his unflinching use of colour, but what we ended up loving even more was that he introduced materials, patterns and designers that we would have otherwise not considered. Tim’s flexibility makes him easy to work with, from the variety of engagement options to his willingness to incorporate our ideas into his vision. Every stage is optional and clearly laid out. Having cautiously initially only engaged him to deliver a concept, we ultimately went on the whole journey with Tim, and are so glad we did!
