When we set out to design this open-plan kitchen for our lovely clients in Richmond, West London, it was a case of blending earthy, rustic charm with the contemporary, engineered architecture of the new extension. The architect had gone for clean lines and modern glazing, including an impressive walk-on floor, which created a striking and functional space. However, our clients wanted more than functionality; they wanted us to create a space that felt human, warm, and ready to host a party at a moment’s notice.
To soften the modernist architecture, we opted for rustic brick slips on one of the key walls. These textured bricks brought an organic warmth to the room, creating a visual counterpoint to the style of the building. The earthy tones anchor the space and make it feel inviting, while the architectural glazing frames the garden beautifully, bringing in an abundance of natural light.
We carried this warmth into the flooring – natural oak herringbone wood planks bring classic style and an understated elegance, their warm tones adding to the room’s inviting ambiance. This foundation became the perfect backdrop for the jewel-toned accents that our clients loved. The result is a room that feels both timeless and playful – a space designed to celebrate the best of both worlds.

One of the standout features of this space is a stunning bespoke oak dining table. At almost three metres long, it comfortably accommodates large family meals and boozy dinner parties alike. Crafted by one of our talented artisans, the table’s waney-edge adds a touch of the unexpected. This natural, slightly irregular edge mirrors the organic feel of the brick slips, providing a cool contrast to the otherwise polished and precise elements of the room.
The dining table anchors the space, creating a natural gathering spot for our clients and their guests. It’s the kind of table where memories are made, whether through laughter-filled meals or intimate late-night conversations over a bottle of wine.
To complement the table, we introduced bespoke velvet dining chairs in vibrant jewel tones. These awesome, bucket shaped chairs are not only comfortable but also exude a sense of fun. Their colours create a playful yet sophisticated vibe, perfectly suited to our clients’ lively personalities and love for entertaining. Jewel tones also feature in the pendant lighting over the kitchen island, made bespoke for us by the exceptional Curiousa & Curiousa. These hand-blown glass pendants are like jewels suspended in the air, their colours refracting light and creating a warm glow in the evenings.
Art plays a big role in this room, adding personality and a sense of fun. We wanted the space to have a tropical beach holiday vibe, so we carefully curated a selection of art prints that embody this theme. The vibrant pieces bring a playful energy to the room, ensuring that it never feels too serious or formal.
Lighting is always another crucial factor. We configured a layered lighting scheme to ensure that every corner of the room was nicely illuminated, no matter the time of day or occasion. Surface mounted spots were used to highlight the artwork, drawing attention to the prints and enhancing their impact. For the dining table, we chose adjustable fixtures that can create an intimate glow for dinner parties or brighter lighting for family meals. This thoughtful lighting design ensures the space feels dynamic and ready for anything, from a relaxed brunch to a lively evening gathering.
The lighting over the blue kitchen island is both functional and decorative, tying in seamlessly with the jewel-tone theme. The glass pendants add a touch of artistry to the space, making the island a focal point. This interplay of light and colour is a hallmark of our design philosophy, which prioritises both beauty and practicality.
This party-perfect kitchen is a great example of how we aim to inject a sense of playfulness and fun into our interiors. We love working with colour, and this space was a dream to design because our clients were so open to bold choices. The vibrant jewel tones, the multi-coloured art, and the organic textures all reflect their lively personalities and their love for a good party.
Our clients are a young family, and like many of our clients, they wanted a home that could cater to both their children and their social lives. The open-plan layout makes it easy to move from cooking to entertaining, while the thoughtful design ensures the space is as practical as it is beautiful. Whether it’s a child’s birthday party or a wine-fuelled dinner with friends, this kitchen is ready to host it all.
One of the challenges many clients face is knowing where to start when designing their homes. They have a vision of what they want but struggle to bring it to life in a cohesive way. That’s where we come in. Our job is to take your ideas and refine them, creating a space that reflects who you are and how you live. This Richmond home is a wonderful example of that process. It’s a room that embodies our clients’ love of life and their unique sense of style, and it was an absolute joy to bring it to life for them.
We think this space not only meets our clients’ needs but will also inspire many happy moments for years to come. It’s projects like these that remind us why we love what we do: creating homes that are as vibrant and dynamic as the people who live in them!
